Loft ladders are easy to get hold of now. With lots of different websites available that will post your new loft ladder out for you, you shouldn’t have any trouble getting hold of the one you want.
But why should you get a loft ladder as opposed to having a permanent staircase built in that heads up to your loft space?
The main advantage is space. A permanent staircase takes up a lot of room and it will need to go upstairs either from a room below or possibly from the landing. Now as you can imagine this will take up a lot of space. And it will be sitting there permanently as well, which means you will have less room in the room below to use all the time. It could be a lot of difference in the space available as well – you might lose a quarter or a third of the room for example.
With a loft ladder you don’t have that problem. The ladder is stored out of the way in the loft while you aren’t using it. And when you need it you just get a pole, hook the end round the loop in the loft hatch and pull it down. The ladder then comes down to meet you, and you can climb up and use the loft space.
As you can see, having permanent stairs might seem like a good idea initially. You can walk up them, whereas a loft ladder requires climbing. But you would need to be prepared to part with a good deal of your space in the room below. What’s more, you would need to part with a lot more money as well.
The cost of putting in a permanent staircase is not cheap by any stretch. The most expensive loft ladders might set you back a figure in the low hundreds, but you can expect a far heftier price for a permanent staircase.
This is the main reason why a lot of people go for a loft ladder instead. But you do need to think about the practicalities as well. For example if you are intending to convert your loft space into a usable bedroom, you would need to put a proper staircase of some kind in there, because it wouldn’t be practical to use a loft ladder the whole time.
But for the most part, if your loft space is only going to be used every now and again, you would be far better off using a cheaper loft ladder that is practical and doesn’t take up any space. Even if you are up the ladder and in the loft, people can still use the room below without any problems.
It’s clear that loft ladders are very advantageous things to have when you are looking to access your loft space quickly, easily and cheaply – and without the cost and space involved with a set of stairs. Perhaps you should start looking to see which loft ladder suits you best?
