Do you know what you have stored up in your loft? Quite a lot of people probably don’t, because it isn’t a room we go into every day. In fact it really isn’t a proper room at all, because in many cases you will have to duck under the rafters and wander around half bent over to walk around the whole space.
But if there is one thing your loft or attic is good for, it is storage. You would be amazed at the amount you can get up there if you need to, although of course you do need to be sure you don’t overload it.
If you aren’t careful though, you can easily end up not knowing where anything is. For example could you confidently say what you have up there at the moment?
The trick is to stop putting anything else in your loft until you sort out the existing contents. So grab your loft ladder – or buy a new one if you need to – and climb up to see what you can find. The initial step is to chuck out all the rubbish and unwanted items you have up there. Remember not to pack any bin bags too full though: you have to get them back down through the loft hatch yet!
Once you have done this you will probably find you have a lot less left to store. So think about what you have left and organise it into piles. Be as logical as you can and make sure that things you will need more often are easy to reach instead of being hidden away at the back.
You may already have adequate storage in your loft, but if you don’t you can think about buying some in the New Year sales. There are lots of ways you can store items up there – chests of drawers are particularly good for small bits and pieces and clothes. Just remember that you will need to take everything up into the loft and put the chest of drawers together up there! Otherwise it won’t fit through the loft hatch.
So you can see that organising your loft isn’t going to be a five minute job. But you could spread it over a few weekends until you manage to get it looking just how you want it to look. And at the end you will be glad you took control of it.
